In spring of 2011, CAF collaborated with Ganna Walska’s Lotusland through an exhibition entitled Eating Apples in Paradise, in which 12 Santa Barbara artists explored the realities and ambiguities of living and creating artwork in such an Edenic location. Artist Penelope Gottlieb, whose work critiques the introduction of foreign species in our local ecosystem, exhibited at CAF and Lotusland simultaneously, providing an opportunity for CAF to create a multidisciplinary art experience for its CAF as Classroom participants, connecting visual and horticultural arts through artist-facilitated art activities.
In early fall of 2011, CAF held a two-part children’s workshop with a 4th grade class from Adelante Charter School. The students visited CAF and participated in a Visual Thinking Strategies tour, focusing on the artwork by nature-inspired artist Luke Matjas. In the second portion of the workshop, Matjas instructed an art-making workshop where the students made their own plant and animal inspired collages.
Kathleen Yorba, CAF's fall 2011 Bloom Projects artist, creatively filled the gallery space with organic materials for her installation entitled Sequence. Yorba's work echoes the mission of the Andrea Lang Fund, as she draws connections between human memory and individual histories, and the history and "memory" of the earth and land.
In the spring of 2012, CAF will be showcasing the work of Susanna Vapneck in our Bloom Projects Gallery. Having grown up in Thousand Oaks, CA, Vapneck's paintings draw from childhood experiences of anticipating the California wildfire season. Her work conveys the movement and temper of nature, while capturing the beauty of western landscapes.
Support for this program has been provided in part by the Andrea Lang Fund. |
